Nutritional Labeling

The Nutrition Labeling and Education Act of 1990 mandates nutrition labeling for most products regulated by FDA. Clearly, it is important to understand how these legislated changes effect labeling of your product.

ABC Research Corporation, employing an experienced professional staff and modern instrumentation, provides comprehensive nutrition analyses for labeling purposes. Our capable staff also can give you knowledgeable interpretations of the regulations.

ABC Research also possesses the Genesis R&D Nutrition labeling and formulation Software and has the ability to utilize this database to reference an ingredient within a recipe for all of its nutritional information. The ingredient in question can then be added to other ingredients in the recipe to calculate the pertinent information needed for label approval or for dietary reference.

Trans Fat Update

On July 11, 2003 the Food and Drug Administration published the first significant change to the Nutritional Facts panel since 1993 when the Nutritional Education Act was implemented. Effective January 1, 2006 trans fats and food allergen labeling must be added to the Nutritional Facts panel of all food products labeled for sale in the United States.

On December 12, 2002, amendments to Canada’s Food and Drug Regulations (FDR) implemented mandatory nutrition labeling on most prepackaged foods. The new regulations outline the labeling requirements for a Nutrition Facts table, update labeling requirements for nutrition content claims and introduce diet-related health claims. Most manufacturers have until December 12, 2005 to comply with the new requirements. The regulations for the Nutrition Facts table are very similar to those found in the United States, with some small, but important, differences.

Our chemistry professional can help you prepare and meet the new labeling regulations for the United States and Canada. Call on ABC Research Corporation now to update your food labels to compliance with government regulations.
